Schule am Inn Innsbruck

In the ten years since its completion, this school has undergone an exciting transformation: from what was once purely a special education center to a place of learning and living for all. The flexible architecture provides robust support for this process.

The school takes its name from its location directly on the Inn River, with its adjoining greenspace, promenade, and wide open areas. The building responds to this generous urban positioning with equal orientation on three sides, while to the north it adjoins a listed middle school from the 1930s, approaching it respectfully and with confidence. A barrier-free connection between the schools is also part of the plan.

If school construction generally reflects social debates about education and participation, this is particularly true in the area of . The aim of this school design was not to create a narrowly specialized building for people with disabilities, but to create a flexible, future-oriented school that is open to evolving pedagogical approaches. Today it has become a school for everyone, with mixed-age primary school classes and classes with a special education focus for 6- to 18-year-olds. The architecture provides a robust and responsive framework for this coexistence.

Second Floor Plan

Above the entrance level, which is visually open to the large garden, the classrooms are organized on two floors. A variety of intermediate zones and imaginative additional spaces—such as small classroom kitchens, atrium-like , and darkened niches for retreat—support the continual shifts between one-on-one care, open learning, and play. Double-height open-air spaces connect the floors and bring abundant daylight into the intermediate zones. Almost every classroom offers access to the covered outdoor terraces, which are used equally for gardening and for play. With its warm materiality, cozy ambience, and close connection to the beautiful natural surroundings, this is inclusion at its best: a good place for everyone to be and to learn.
