Pioneering Schools and Kindergartens in Austria

This website is based on the book Neue Lernwelten (New Worlds of Learning), which documents the evolution of school and kinder­garten archi­tecture in Austria from 2010 to 2025. It addresses educators and archi­tects alike and aims to establish common ground for collabo­ration between the disciplines. To this end, it offers several ways to approach the topic: 50 case studies, 6 introductory essays, and 5 discussions among experts.

Case Studies

Fifty case studies present exemplary schools and kinder­gartens across Austria. These include projects in urban and rural environ­ments as well as new buildings and renovations, conversions, and expansions. The projects were selected in collaboration between ÖISS and the Architektur­stiftung Österreich, chaired by Christian Kühn.

Essays

Six introductory essays provide an overview of the topic from various perspectives at the intersection of archi­tecture and pedagogy. After a general analysis of recent develop­ments, the essays focus on the topics of participation, sustaina­bility, regulatory frame­works, and future outlooks.

The Austrian Institute for School and Sports Facilities (ÖISS) is a foundation established in 1964 by the federal govern­ment and all federal states. It serves as a center of expertise for the planning, construction, and operation of educational, sports, and move­ment spaces in Austria.
