Volksschule Bruckneudorf
The new primary school in Bruckneudorf occupies part of a listed former pea‑processing factory. It is the first building block of a planned urban development that will transform the site into a new town center.
The origins of present-day Bruckneudorf lie in a military camp established in the mid-nineteenth century, strategically located on what was at the time the border between the Austrian and Hungarian halves of the empire. To supply the troops, a large canning factory was built with historicist architectural vocabulary. Following vacancy, partial demolition, and adaptive reuse, parts of the former pea-shelling plant—locally known as the “Erbse” (“pea”)—were converted to house the primary school and a music school at the start of the 2022/23 academic year.
The transformation required carefully balancing heritage conservation with the demands of a modern learning environment. Externally, the building remains largely unchanged, with only transparent pavilions being added for the cloakroom and entrance area. Inside, much of the historic substance remains tangible—the original wooden ceilings, partially exposed brick walls, new wood-frame windows replicating old ones, and the existing load-bearing structure with timber and cast-iron columns.

This configuration resulted in eight classrooms on the first floor and four on the ground floor, the latter currently used for after-school care. These classrooms are arranged along the outer walls, while broad, courtyard-facing circulation areas in front of them are used for a variety of educational activities and as a spacious area for physical activity. Skylights and high glass bands in the partition walls bring in additional natural light. As the principal puts it: “The school exudes a very special atmosphere; a blend of historic charm and modern infrastructure that is truly one of a kind.”
The car-free area in front of the school also functions as a playground and is set to become a new main square in the future. Plans for the next stages include both new construction and the adaptive reuse of two towering silos into residential apartments. For the growing community of Bruckneudorf, the school thus forms the nucleus of a comprehensive urban restructuring.
