Volksschule Algersdorf Graz

This expansive school complex shapes the Eggenberg district of Graz. The primary school, a new component of the education campus, was opened in 2016, complementing the adjacent middle school and kindergarten. By 2028, a middle school for sports will complete the campus ensemble.

The primary school is a comb-shaped, one- to two‑story building located at the transition from townhouses to wide-open greenspaces and fields. A majority of the 300 pupils use the large sports field and play area west of the school, which is especially popular during after-school care. Colorful wooden slats adorn the façade of the new building, forming a lively contrast to the stucco ornamentation of the middle school.

The entrance is reached via a forecourt and marked by a welcoming canopy. Upon entering, a spacious atrium unfolds, creating complex visual connections throughout. To the left, a “shop window” offers a view into the spacious gymnasium below, which is shared by the primary and middle schools. A broad wooden stairway leads down; its  making it a popular spot to gather. Spacious, floor-to-ceiling glazed wooden doors and ribbon windows allow one to simultaneously observe what is happening in the adjacent rooms, from the recess areas and cafeteria to the outdoors. Low window parapets are scaled to children’s height and can also be used as seating. Colorful furnishings contribute to the warm and inviting atmosphere.

From the atrium, the main wing—situated along the street—extends over two levels, accessing the administrative offices and , with side wings branching off to form . Each cluster consists of four classrooms, a teachers’ room, and a group room arranged around an . The side wings clasp a greened courtyard and a rooftop terrace, providing additional space for play and social interaction.

The open nature of the learning zones has proven demanding in practice, as independent learning requires intensive individual support from teachers. Nevertheless, the flowing spatial concept fosters connection and provides strong conditions for personal growth and playful learning.
